Barbie Davis Acton works to enhance lives of children and their families

Columbus Childhood League Executive Director Barbie Davis Acton hard a work in her office at the Childhood League Center.

In a recent tour of the Childhood League Center (across from Children's Hospital on 18th Street) given by Columbus Childhood League Executive Director Barbie Davis Acton, it was the good fortune of this correspondent to learn about the outstanding work done at this fine facility. Barbie, her staff, and legions of volunteers work very hard and do an excellent job of creating an environment that makes the place feel like a home away from home for developmentally disabled children from birth to age five, as well as for their families.

Way to go Barbie and your staff! Continued best wishes with your efforts!

Classmates at basketball games over the weekend

Susan Callif Eisenman was at the Otterbein vs. Capital game played at Capital Center in Bexley on Saturday. Susan's niece, Chelsea, is on the Otterbein roster but did not get in the game.

Beth Costello Erdy was at Pickerington Central High School, Sunday, to watch her daughter Brittny play for Olentangy Liberty against Toledo Start, part of the Fairfield Federal 2006 Shootout for All-Ohio Girls prep teams. Brittny and her Patriot teammates put up a strong second half fight despite coming out on the short end of the scoreboard.

Paul Newman

AKA Meck

Annette Funicello

AKA Leslie Mormol Green

Demi Moore

AKA Beth Lavine Mullaney

Kristin Davis

AKA Elise Stevens

About celebrity look alikes...

Here are some responses I've received so far...

First, from Beth Lavine Mullaney:

"David,
Not sure if Elise has mentioned this to you or not, but she often is mistaken for Kristin Davis, one of the actresses from the "Sex and the City" series. While Trish, Elise, and I were in Bimini, some local folks actually asked her for her autograph. She was happy to oblige, being the giving gal that she is!!"

Elise Stevens chimes in:

Dave,
Beth also is often mistaken for a celebrity - Demi Moore! And what is even funnier, her husband, Kevin, is a dead ringer for Tom Hanks! Imagine what it must be like for Beth and Kevin to walk the streets of Manhattan with those celebrity identities!
Elise

And, this one, from Leslie Mormol Green:

"Hi David:
Different people have felt I looked like Annette Fonicello."

Trivia question correctly answered

Our Awesome Outstanding Alumni Representative Teri Cohodes Morof was the first to respond (and correctly so) that I won my two letters in tennis. I was boys tennis team manager during my junior and senior years. (Yes, they do give letters to team sport managers.) Congrats, Teri! Way to go!

Meck BHS'80 Sports Trivia Q

There is no prize for a correct response:

How many Bexley High School letters does Meck have? In what sport? In what capacity did he serve to merit recognition. Click on (dmeckler@att.net) with your answer. (There, I just gave you two excellent hints!). Thanks.

Do you resemble a celebrity?

Have you ever been told that you look like someone famous?

I have been told by two women that I look like...Paul Newman.

Done laughing yet?

One woman is someone who has been a longtime friend of our family, someone I've known since I was a little kid. A few years ago, she started teasing me about it and now it has become a joke between us. This year, for my holiday gift from her, she said it was to "Paul." I write my thank you notes for holiday and birthday gifts to her as "Paul." I even inform her that Joanne (Woodward, spouse) and I are grateful for the gift and that it wears really well on me.

Last year, on her birthday, I got her some Paul Newman food products, such as marinara and salad dressing. I printed off a photo of me and wished her a happy birthday, even signing it "Paul." Maybe I should have included a note indicating that some people think I look like "David Meckler," whomever he is.

The other woman is someone I met last fall at a friend's tailgate party prior to an OSU football game. She turns to me and asks, "Has anyone ever told you that you look like Paul Newman?" I responded "Yes." I went on to inform her about the lady I just told you about previously and how it has become a running joke between us. It cracked the assembled crowd up pretty good.

Has anyone ever told you that you resemble a celebrity or famous person? If so, please e-mail me (dmeckler@att.net) along with any funny stories that go along with your "noteriety" so that I can blog it and we can all have a nice chuckle over it. Thanks.

"Paul Newman", AKA "Meck"

Tongue twister leads to embarrassing moment in Drama Class

Back in 11th grade, I took Drama Class. Mr. Peters was the teacher. One day, he had us do tongue twisters in class. It was a tremendous learning experience, illustrating that any dramatic performer can mess up a line in a performance.

The line I was to say was "Three gray geese in a green grass grazing. Gray were the geese and green was the grazing." However, what came out of my mouth turned the unsuspecting geese into creatures who live an alternative lifestyle (I left out the "r" in "gray"). My freudian slip cracked the whole class up in a memory I still have to this day.

Paula Sluder Schleppi update on her dad

Paula informs us about how her father is doing:

OK, my time to submit some news!

BIG, BAD SGT. SLUDER, came home to visit for the holidays from his condo on ST PETE BEACH. Dad suffered a major heart attack on Christmas eve/Christmas day. He has since undergone major by-pass surgery(5 artery's) and is currently doing well. Their 2 week visit has now been extended to 3-4 wks. FINAL NOTE: OLD SARGE is grouchy as HELL, but doing WELL!

Best regards for a safe and healthy 2006!

Thanks for the update, Paula. Hope things continue to improve for your dad.

Chris McGuire Detty's Excellent 2005 Adventures!

Chris McGuire Detty's photo from the 2005 Ohio State vs. Indiana football game played at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, IN. The "Men of the Scarlet and Gray" prevailed 41-10 in the contest, played on October 22.

Chris relates the various highlights of her year just past:

"What a year we had. We took a couple of weekend trips on the motorcycles around Ohio. Gregg & I went to Cabo San Lucas to celebrate our 15th Anniversary. We stayed at the Pueblo Bonita Rose Resort & Spa. http://www.pueblobonito-rose.com/index.asp"

"We spent eight fun-filled days on the beach, in the desert on ATV's and exploring the town. We celebrated with Sammy Hagar at his Cabo Wabo Cantina on his birthday. That was a great show. Michael Anthony (Van Halen) performed with him. We caught him stopping in to perform four other nights. The food was excellent everywhere we ate. Three days after we got home we took a bus trip to the OSU/Indiana game with Bill Harriman (BHS '77) and friends. I attached a photo of the game." (see above)

"I'm not sure what new adventures 2006 will hold for us but we'll certainly have fun discovering."

Chris, thanks for the great report about the things you did in 2005. It was good to see you during reunion weekend (another highlight, to be sure!), as well!

Cathy Klunk Armstrong overlooks the Tour de France

Cathy Klunk Armstrong looking out her Paris hotel window along the Champs Elysee as the Tour de France cycles by last summer.

Cathy relates how she and husband Chris had their room upgraded by their hotel in the French capital:

"We arrived in Paris after 12 days driving around the Alps and Pyrenees and riding our bikes. We were pretty ripe in our T-shirts and shorts when we arrived at the Marriott on the Champs Elysee. I travel quite a bit for work so I am an elite member and when we checked in, I presented my card and reservation confirmation. We had gotten reservation 10 months earlier as we knew hotels would be at a premium for the Tour. This one in particular since it sat on the finish course. The race was ending on Sunday and we checked in on Friday, so they were already setting up bleachers and getting prepared for the race finish. As I was checking in, the attendant at the counter as if there was any relation to Lance. I smiled politely and said "unfortunately No." She asked if we could wait as they would like to upgrade our room. We sat in the lobby and they served us champagne. When the bellman arrived to take us to our room he led us to the 3rd floor. He informed us that there was also an entrance to the sitting room on the 4th floor. Chris and I were quite surprised to find we had been upgraded to a 3 floor suite that looked out onto the Champs Elysee with a view of the Arc de Triumph. Needless to say we had a very comfortable stay in Paris."

So, like Lance, Cathy and Chris had a lot to Crow about!
