Arnett spouse saves stroke victim with corkscrew!
A local radio commercial playing here in Central Ohio for Riverside Methodist Hospital deals with how Dr. Ronald Budzik, husband of our very own Dr. Amy Arnett Budzik, saved a stroke victim using a "corkscrew." I asked Amy about it and here is her response:
Hi David,
Yes, that was Ron. He uses a catheter which enters the body through the groin vessels. He snakes it up into the brain vasculature and then screws a corkscrew-like device into the clot that is blocking the vessel and retrieves it, restoring blood flow to the portion of the brain that was blocked and presenting with stroke symptoms. It is interesting and very localized with less contraindications than with traditional systemic treatment - anticoagulating the entire body. People just need to know where to go if they are having a stroke, since not all hospitals provide this type of care, and time is critical.
Hope all is well,
Amy
