Joan Greenberg obit
What follows is a Columbus Dispatch obit for Joan Greenberg, who was a Bexley Junior High Math teacher during our time there:
GREENBERG
Joan Grace Lerner Greenberg, 74, of Columbus, died peacefully with her family by her side at her home on Wednesday, September 6, 2006, after a long illness. Formerly a longtime Bexley resident, she was a veteran educator in retirement. Following a short stint with Reynoldsburg City Schools, she positively impacted thousands of students' lives in the Bexley City Schools for more than three decades, during which she was honored multiple times for her unbridled commitment to enriching the lives of students at Bexley Junior High School and Bexley Middle School. Such was her love for education and those she mentored that immediately after her retirement in 2001, she pursued and was active in substitute teaching at Bexley City Schools. Born to Isidore and Margaret Lerner on December 11, 1931, at Albany, N.Y., she was reared in Catskill, N.Y. Known to family and friends as "Joanie," she was graduated from the Edgewood School at Greenwich, Conn., in 1949 and Simmons College at Boston, Mass., in 1953. She also completed graduate-level courses at The Ohio State University. Joanie thoroughly enjoyed the arts, literature, bridge, gardening, tennis and travel. Nothing was more important to Joanie than her family. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Bob Greenberg; son, Steve Greenberg, his wife, Sally, and their daughters, Annie and Rachel of Carmel, Ind.; son, Peter Greenberg, his wife, Jennifer, their daughter, Emily, and their son, Sam of Bexley; brothers, Dr. Martin Lerner (Gerline) of Suffolk, Va. and Robert Lerner (Gilda) of West Hartford, Conn.; cousins, Jerry Lerner (Arlene) of Stanfordville, N.Y., Carol Lubetsky of New York, Laurel Lerner of Cranbury, N.J. and Norman Price of Philadelphia; three nieces, two nephews, two great-nieces and eleven great-nephews; and countless friends and colleagues. A private graveside service will be conducted at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. A celebration of Joanie's life will be held at SCHOEDINGER EAST CHAPEL, 5360 E. Livingston Ave., at 7 p.m. Monday. The family will receive visitors at the residence Tuesday and Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. The family's preferred charity is HomeReach Hospice of Ohio Health, 3505 Olentangy River Road, Columbus 43214.
