The changing face of Main Street in Bexley

For those of you who haven't been back for awhile, what follows is a brief tour/overview of the changes being made to Main Street in Bexley. Enjoy!

Current CVS Pharmacy and Bexley Pizza Plus locations. Years ago, the CVS building was a Kroger grocery store, while the current home of Bexley Pizza Plus at one time housed The Toddle House. The Bexley Pizza Plus building will be torn down to allow for more CVS parking. CVS will be building a prototype CVS building in the current CVS parking area. The current CVS building will be demolised upon completion of the new building and increase the amount of parking on the site.

Ah, yes! Rubino's. Right next door to the construction work on the future Sky Bank location at Vernon and Main.

Future home of Bexley Pizza Plus at Roosevelt and Main, right next door to Rubino's. Both establishments are not worried about competition from the other because they have distinctly different clientele's.

Vernon and Main. Future home to Sky Bank. Building
was previously Cord Camera and before that had been
home to a bank.

Main and Roosevelt location for The First Bank of Bexley.

Main and Roosevelt future Chase Bank location on former site of Tracy's Shell service station.

Main Street between Dawson and Cassady across from Connell's and a few doors down from Cup 'O Joe. This site will be the future home of Connell's and of another location of Aladdin
(mediterranean restaurant). Connell's current home across the street will be raised to make way for the future home of Congregation Torat Emet as the Main Steet Synagogue moves down the block a few doors from its current location.

Parkview and Main mixed use residential/retail/restaurant/offices complex.

Ruthie Schnitz Redmond fundraising efforts against breast cancer

Hi,

Got these e-mails from Ruthie Schnitz Redmond in the Valley of the Sun. Ruthie invites you to sponsor her in her efforts to raise funds in the battle against breast cancer. The event in Arizona is scheduled for November 3-5, 2006. Good luck and Mazel tov, Ruthie!

David,

I really enjoyed your most recent article "Future deal for Class of 2006." I was especially taken by the pay it forward section, since I have recently signed up to do the 3-Day walk in support of Breast Cancer. We all get so wrapped up in our very busy lives, and often forget that there are so many people out there who are less fortunate and could use our help. So this is my first "big" attempt to pay it forward, and it hopefully will be the first of many attempts to help others in a big way. I would appreciate it if you would forward my letter to anyone who might be willing to help. Thanks for your regular updates. I do read them, and enjoy catching up with the people back home.

My 3-Day letter will follow shortly after this.

Regards and thanks again,

Ruthie

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." --Margaret Mead

Dear David,

Greetings and warm wishes to you. In case you haven't heard, I was recently invited by my niece, Katie Redmond, to participate in the Breast Cancer 3-Day. This is a 60-mile walk over a three day period to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. I accepted this challenge and have already begun my physical training, and am now asking you to assist with my fundraising efforts.

All walkers must raise a minimum of $2200 before they are allowed to participate in the 3-Day. I am setting my sights high and hope to collect at least twice that amount. Please keep in mind when deciding how much to donate, that not only will I be walking 60 miles (rain or shine), but I will also be sleeping in a tent for two nights! Most importantly, though, it is through your generous gifts that the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation can continue its quest for a cure.

Deciding to accept this challenge was not difficult for me. My father is not only a proud, courageous and inspiring survivor of pancreatic cancer, but also a daily reminder of how cancer changes lives. He and my mother have taken this unplanned journey together, with strength and grace, humor and love, and unknowingly have inspired me to take my own journey. Please join me in the fight against breast cancer by donating on-line (link to my HQ page), or by contributing a check made payable to Breast Cancer 3-Day (download donation form). Thank you in advance for your moral and monetary support.

Warmest regards,

Ruthie

Rex Elliott's Mom in The Columbus Dispatch

Thanks to John Lewis for bringing this inspirational story to my attention regarding Rex Elliott's mom, Betty Ann, and how she is getting support from her husband and family. This has been in The Columbus Dispatch on May 21, 22, and 23, 2006:

Guys and Dolls at Bexley

Last night, I attended a performance of "Guys and Dolls" at Bexley High School's Schottenstein Theatre. The talented kids in the cast, orchestra, and crew did an excellent job of putting on a great show.

Among others attending the performance were Eric and Barbie Davis Acton, Barbie's sister Bonnie Davis (who nowadays teaches pre-Kindergarten students in Franklin County),
and Bexley City Auditor Larry Heiser.

A few weeks ago, during my trip out west, I had the tremendous good fortune to attend a high school production of "Bye Bye, Birdie." Carole Yoder Dell's daughter, Jordan Yoder, had a backup role in the cast. She and her talented classmates did an excellent job of producing an
extremely entertaining evening.

Cathy Klunk Armstrong ALS fundraising bike ride a success!

Kudos to Cathy Klunk Armstrong, who along with husband, Chris, as well as the 12 other members of their 14 person team, raised more than $4,ooo in the battle against ALS. Way to go,
Cathy!

BHS'80 flight stories

I'll get things started:

In 1995, I was headed to the Kickoff Classic football game to see the Buckeyes play Boston College. On the plane going to and coming back from New York was Judy Theibert.

Then, in 1996, Bill Burke and I were on the same flight from Columbus to Detroit to catch connecting flights to other cities.

When it comes to flying with celebrites, sometime in the '70's, on a flight from Bangor, ME, to Boston, my family and I were on the same flight as former Boston Celtic K. C. Jones.

In 2004, on a flight from Dallas to Columbus, I was on the same flight with sportscaster Dick Enberg, who was coming to town to work the first and second round NCAA men's basketball tournament games that year at Nationwide Arena. One big difference was that Enberg sat in first class, and I, of course, did not. Oh, my!

Roanne Smith Foley relates a couple of her experiences:

I met David Hasselhoff from Bay Watch at the Indy airport about 18 years ago. He was playing Night Rider then. He was conceited and snobby. Sad but true.

I was in Chicago boarding a plane to Rochester, MN. last Nov. I saw a man with red carhart overalls, a white beard, long white hair and a red back pack monagrammed Santa Claus. I said, " Santa will you bring me diamonds for Christmas?" He said, " You mean you want bling bling?" I said , "Yes!" He said, "The best I can do is to give you wishes for good health and a happy family." I said, " How come your not flying your reindeer?" He said, " The FFA does not let me fly them much since 9-11. On Christmas I recieved some nice bling.

I know that there really is a Santa now! Santa is a much nicer guy than David Hasselhoff, even if David is better looking.

-Ro

Scott Hanna e-mails this story that will make you "want to rock and roll all night and party everyday..."

A few years back, I was in Detroit waiting on a flight and sitting next to me was Gene Simons from KISS. We exchanged a few words, basically complaining about the delayed flight. He was heading to Columbus to do a radio promotional bit. And no...I didn't ask him to stick out his tongue.

I wonder how Scott recognized him without the face paint.

Keep those stories coming to dmeckler@att.net.

Thanks.

Looking for BHS'80 flight stories

Hi,

Ever been on a plane and a classmate(s) is on board? If so, please let me know. I'm looking for stories with a BHS'80 angle to it. This includes those of you who travel to spend common gender bonding time together.

A few of you are now or have been a flight attendant, either full or parttime. Have you ever been on a flight with a classmate(s) on board? What was that like? How did it go?

If you've ever been on a flight as either a passenger or flight attendant and there has been one or more celebrities on board, please let me know about that, as well. Thanks.

Please e-mail your stories to dmeckler@att.net.

Thanks.

Well, excuse me....!!! (Meck gets mistaken for another celebrity.)

This past Sunday morning (April 30, 2006), I'm in Sacramento, and I'm waiting to board my connecting flight to Dallas. As I'm standing in line, this guy next to me starts telling me that I look like Steve Martin. My response to him was, "Well, excuse me...!!!" The guy laughs.

He then asks another passenger standing in line if he thinks I resemble Steve Martin. The passenger says "No." The man who did think I resemble the comedian continued to go on for another moment or so before finally giving the thought up.

First, it was Paul Newman. Now, it's Steve Martin. Who's next? Johnny Carson? Jay Leno? (I don't have the chin.) David Letterman, maybe? Who knows?

Whadya think?
