Cherrie Groves reports from Shreveport on impacts of BP Gulf Coast Oil spill fiasco!
Got these insights and perspectives from Cherrie on the situation along the Gulf Coast:
The impact up here is mostly emotional. We have many people living here now that were displaced from the hurricanes. There are also many people that have lived or have family down south. The hurt is palpable. The water, the marshes, and the bayous are intertwined with daily life. New Orleans is below sea level! To get from here to there, the raised freeway crosses waterway for more than 30 miles. This destruction is like losing a relative. After Katrina there was a sense of rebuilding and rebirth. The destruction was concrete. This disaster is a monster the average person cannot fight. The destruction is ongoing and cannot be stopped. The effects will last for decades. The good news is that New Orleans proper is still up and ready for business. The are bringing in seafood from other areas and the restaurants and nightlife are as vibrant as ever. Nothing stops a good party in the Big Easy!
Please remember as time goes on and the news media disappears that entire ways of life have been decimated and may never return. This was preventable and its effects may not even be totally uncovered in our lifetime.
